O botânico Stefano Mancuso apresenta intrigantes evidências a favor.

Arquitectura do Futuro- hortas verticais- o projecto DragonFly

By Karen Cilento, May 2009

Amidst financial buildings and high-rise apartments, Belgian architect Vincent Callebaut has redefined the conventional skyscraper. His 132 story complex for the south edge of Roosevelt Island addresses the pressing need for environmental and ecological sustainability. This conceptual design focuses on creating a completely self-sustaining organism that not only utilizes solar, wind, and water energies, but also addresses the pending food shortage problem.

More after the break.
The mixed programs in ’s are centered around two main towers. These symmetrically arranged towers allow growth to expand vertically rather than horizontally to account for the crowded Manhattan conditions. A sprawling greenhouse links the two towers and helps carry the load of the building. The complex is arranged in a way that housing units and work offices are interspersed between meadows and farms.
The metal and glass wings, directly inspired by the exoskeleton of a , house the plant and animal farms. Due to the appropriate sun and wind conditions within these wings, proper soil nutrient levels can be achieved to maximize plant growth. Exterior vertical gardens filter rain water, and once that water is mixed with domestic liquid waste, both are treated organically in order to be reused for farming needs.
The space between the wings accumulates warm air from the exoskeleton to heat the complex during the winter, while natural ventilation teamed with plant evapo-perspiration will cool the air during the summer.
imagines the occupants of the caring for its vast fields, thus allowing each user the opportunity to make the complex a success. Although Dubai seems like the perfect place for such an experiment, has not given up hope that New Yorkers can also pave the way during this sustainable era.

10 Human Fingerprints On Climate Change

By John Cook
The NOAA State of the Climate 2009 report is an excellent summary of the many lines of evidence that global warming is happening. Acknowledging the fact that the planet is warming leads to the all important question - what's causing global warming? Here is a summary of the empirical evidence that answers this question. Many different observations find a distinct human fingerprint on climate change:

To get a closer look, click on the pic above to get a high-res 1024x768 version (you're all welcome to use this graphic in your Powerpoint presentations). Or to dig even deeper, here's more info on each indicator (including links to the original data or peer-reviewed research):
  1. Humans are currently emitting around 30 billion tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere every year (CDIAC). Of course, it could be coincidence that CO2 levels are rising so sharply at the same time so let's look at more evidence that we're responsible for the rise in CO2 levels.
  2. When we measure the type of carbon accumulating in the atmosphere, we observe more of the type of carbon that comes from fossil fuels (Manning 2006).
  3. This is corroborated by measurements of oxygen in the atmosphere. Oxygen levels are falling in line with the amount of carbon dioxide rising, just as you'd expect from fossil fuel burning which takes oxygen out of the air to create carbon dioxide (Manning 2006).
  4. Further independent evidence that humans are raising CO2 levels comes from measurements of carbon found in coral records going back several centuries. These find a recent sharp rise in the type of carbon that comes from fossil fuels (Pelejero 2005).
  5. So we know humans are raising CO2 levels. What's the effect? Satellites measure less heat escaping out to space, at the particular wavelengths that CO2 absorbs heat, thus finding "direct experimental evidence for a significant increase in the Earth's greenhouse effect". (Harries 2001, Griggs 2004, Chen 2007).
  6. If less heat is escaping to space, where is it going? Back to the Earth's surface. Surface measurements confirm this, observing more downward infrared radiation (Philipona 2004, Wang 2009). A closer look at the downward radiation finds more heat returning at CO2 wavelengths, leading to the conclusion that "this experimental data should effectively end the argument by skeptics that no experimental evidence exists for the connection between greenhouse gas increases in the atmosphere and global warming." (Evans 2006).
  7. If an increased greenhouse effect is causing global warming, we should see certain patterns in the warming. For example, the planet should warm faster at night than during the day. This is indeed being observed (Braganza 2004, Alexander 2006).
  8. Another distinctive pattern of greenhouse warming is cooling in the upper atmosphere, otherwise known as the stratosphere. This is exactly what's happening (Jones 2003).
  9. With the lower atmosphere (the troposphere) warming and the upper atmosphere (the stratophere) cooling, another consequence is the boundary between the troposphere and stratophere, otherwise known as the tropopause, should rise as a consequence of greenhouse warming. This has been observed (Santer 2003).
  10. An even higher layer of the atmosphere, the ionosphere, is expected to cool and contract in response to greenhouse warming. This has been observed by satellites (Laštovika 2006).
Science isn't a house of cards, ready to topple if you remove one line of evidence. Instead, it's like a jigsaw puzzle. As the body of evidence builds, we get a clearer picture of what's driving our climate. We now have many lines of evidence all pointing to a single, consistent answer - the main driver of global warming is rising carbon dioxide levels from our fossil fuel burning.

Green Power Island: A Vision for Renewable Energy Storage

With plans already drawn for several locales, including Copenhagen, Bahrain, Jiangsu, and Tampa, Florida, each island is designed to enhance the surrounding environment and utilize the space with mixed used capabilities. Built primarily around storage of wind energy, the islands can also include PV and concentrated solar, and even biomass production. Many islands also have plans for recreation trails, beaches, harbors,  even residential and business units.

por Tom Schueneman August 5, 2010

Are energy storage islands the green solution we need?

Denmark is a windy place. Windy enough to provide 20 percent of the country’s power generation from both onshore and offshore wind farms. As growth in wind power continues, the problem of large-scale energy storage from wind becomes an increasing challenge.

With a focus on the abundant wind energy in Denmark and an understanding of the challenge, Copenhagen-based architectural firm Gottlieb Paludan has proposed an innovative design for energy storage called Green Power Island.

While the design for Green Power Island is new, the fundamental concept behind it isn’t, using pumped hydro to store renewable energy – an idea already in wide use. Conventional pumped hydro systems use vertically separated reservoirs to utilize the power of water and gravity. During low demand water is pumped using excess energy from the lower to the upper reservoir. As demand increases, the water is allowed to flow downhill into the lower reservoir, generating electricity in the process.

The system is limited by the amount of water that can be stored and the height difference between the two reservoirs. Gottlieb Paludan takes the idea and gives it a unique “Danish twist.” Green Power Island proposes using seawater pumped into a lagoon-like reservoir built into an artificial island. When demand is low, pumps driven by wind turbines empties the reservoir. At peak periods, water is allowed to flow back into the reservoir, through turbines generating electricity to meet the rising demand.

How green is that island?

Are there substantial engineering and environmental concerns with the Green Power Island concept? As one ex-governor might say, you betcha. Issues that Sten Sedring, communications officer for Gottlieb Paludan, readily acknowledges. Concerns of the impact on the seabed and surrounding habitat chief among them. Nonetheless, it does provide a means of utility scale renewable energy production and storage near demand centers (no need for long distance transmission lines), and Sedring argues that with mixed-used planning as a key feature, Green Power Islands could enhance their surroundings in a variety of ways beyond just power production.

It beats climate negotiations (business as usual)…

I first learned of Green Power Island last December while playing hooky for a day from the COP15 climate conference in Copenhagen. Given the choice of spending another day watching the bitter, log-jammed negotiations unfold at the Bella Center, I opted instead of joining a small band of journalists for a press trip highlighting Danish innovation. It was a refreshing change of pace.

There are no doubt significant hurdles to overcome before Green Power Island could ever become reality. Some might say that even if it were possible, it would be little more than a huge manmade offshore monstrosity. To those I would suggest, consider the options. We are digging deep into the ocean’s depths, wringing tar from sand, blowing the tops off of mountains – all for one more drop of oil, one more lump of coal. To most of us, this environmental destruction is largely out of sight, out of mind. That is, until disaster strikes, as surely it does, and surely it will.

We find ourselves at a time when we desperately need solutions, business as usual won’t cut it anymore. If there is one certainty, it is that the world we live in will look very different 50 years from now than it does now – one way or another.

Whether Green Power Island becomes a viable solution or not, it is at least an idea, a sincere attempt at a solution and a vision for how our world might look in future. It could be worse.

Lembrei-me deste poema.

Estou preso à vida e olho meus companheiros.
a vida presente.

Reducing the Hazards from Stored Spent Power-Reactor Fuel in the United States, by Robert Alvarez

Summary
In this report, in 2003 Alvarez et al. recommended that all U.S. spent fuel older than five years should be placed in dry, hardened storage containers, greatly reducing the fire risk if water was drained from reactor cooling ponds. Casks should be placed in either thick-walled structures or in earthen berms capable of withstanding plane and missile impacts. We estimated this could be accomplished with existing cask technology in 10 years at a cost of $3 billion-$7 billion. Moreover, future reactors should be designed so that temporary cooling ponds are encased in heavy concrete containment. Such steps were taken by Germany 25 years ago in response to the threats posed by accidental fighter jet crashes and terrorist attacks.

Hocico - Bite me!

This is the day I pray, pray for you to die
I just don't fucking care
I hope I see you cry tonight
This is the day I bite
I'm going out of control
I'm your place to hide whenever you want to end your life

My sky is turning red
I cannot breathe your air
I hope tonight you choke in the seduction of despair

Send me flowers, I'm fine, hate me!
Everything's alright, bite me!
It's your lovely words and your sweet face
It's the way that you smile
Let me know when you are dying, hate me!

Let me know if you feel
Let me know if you feel the same
Let me know if you feel
Let me know, let me know
[2x]

Bite me! Hate me! [4x]

Bad dreams made you real, this is the way I lived
Bad dreams made you real, but I'm going to finish it
Nightmares are nothing but a beast, a beast that eats you up
Go back to your Hell, suffer your own life
Just make sure you don't breed

Hate me! Bite me! No love lost!
Hate me! Bite me bitch!
All I need now is your hate
Hate [7x]

Send me flowers, I'm fine, hate me!
Everything's alright, bite me!
It's your lovely words and your sweet face
It's the way that you smile
Let me know when you are dying, hate me!

Ao gritar repetidamente a expressão "Bite me!"
