Agroecologia aumenta a fertilidade do solo, elimina o uso de adubos sintéticos e de pesticidas


De acordo com o estudo Análise da Agroecologia no nosso País, 2020 em Portugal, não existe uma legislação específica dedicada exclusivamente à agroecologia. No entanto, existem várias leis e medidas que apoiam a agricultura sustentável e práticas relacionadas, como a agricultura familiar, circuitos curtos de comercialização e agricultura biológica. Estas medidas indiretamente incentivam e promovem a agroecologia. 

Instrumentos Legais e Medidas de Apoio:

Agricultura Familiar:
A agricultura familiar é reconhecida e apoiada através de várias medidas, como o Programa de Desenvolvimento Rural (PDR 2020) e outras políticas que visam a sustentabilidade do setor agrícola.
Circuitos Curtos de Comercialização:
Existe legislação e medidas que incentivam a venda direta de produtos agrícolas do produtor ao consumidor, promovendo os circuitos curtos de comercialização, o que é uma prática central na agroecologia.

Agricultura Biológica:
A produção biológica é regulada por legislação específica e tem apoios financeiros, como os pagamentos agroambientais, que são um incentivo para a adoção de práticas agroecológicas. 

Ações e Políticas:
Programa de Desenvolvimento Rural (PDR 2020):
Este programa inclui medidas que visam a promoção da sustentabilidade ambiental e económica do setor agrícola, com foco na agricultura familiar e em práticas sustentáveis.

Estratégia Nacional para a Agricultura Biológica:
Esta estratégia estabelece metas e medidas para o desenvolvimento da produção biológica em Portugal, o que contribui para a prática agroecológica. 

Oportunidades e Desafios:
Apesar da falta de uma legislação específica, a agroecologia tem um papel crescente em Portugal, impulsionada por preocupações ambientais, de saúde pública e de sustentabilidade económica. Os desafios incluem a necessidade de maior investimento em investigação e desenvolvimento, a sensibilização dos consumidores e a criação de políticas públicas mais abrangentes para a agroecologia.

Grandes lobistas da carne e dos laticínios aparecem em número recorde na COP28

Lobistas de empresas agrícolas industriais e grupos comerciais compareceram em número recorde na Cop28 , com três vezes mais delegados representando a indústria da carne e dos laticínios do que no ano passado.

Estão presentes representantes de algumas das maiores empresas do agronegócio do mundo – como o fornecedor de carne JBS , a gigante de fertilizantes Nutrien, a gigante de alimentos Nestlé e a empresa de pesticidas Bayer – bem como de poderosos grupos de lobby da indústria.

A carne e os laticínios estão particularmente bem representados, com 120 delegados, mas uma análise da lista de delegados feita pelo DeSmog mostra que o número de lobistas que representam os interesses do agronegócio de forma mais ampla mais que dobrou desde 2022, chegando a 340.

Além disso, a análise revela que mais de 100 delegados viajaram para Dubai como parte de delegações de países, o que concede acesso privilegiado às negociações diplomáticas. Este número aumentou de 10 em 2022.

As empresas de carne e laticínios, em particular, estão sob crescente escrutínio devido à poluição proveniente da pecuária, que emite cerca de um terço da produção global de metano, um gás de efeito estufa de curta duração, cuja redução é identificada como o caminho mais rápido para desacelerar o aquecimento global. .

Ben Lilliston, do Instituto de Política Agrícola e Comercial, afirmou: “Com um maior escrutínio sobre as emissões das empresas de carne e laticínios, não é surpreendente que estejam a intensificar o seu jogo para evitar qualquer resultado da Cop que possa prejudicar as suas operações. Mesmo assim, a triplicação do número de delegados é alarmante – demonstra a necessidade urgente de reformas que limitem a influência corporativa nas reuniões da ONU sobre o clima.”

A carne não é a única indústria sob os holofotes. Agricultores, retalhistas e transformadores também geram emissões de gases com efeito de estufa através do desmatamento de árvores, da utilização de fertilizantes sintéticos derivados de combustíveis fósseis e no transporte, embalagem e armazenamento.

Karina Gonçalves David, representante dos pequenos agricultores do Brasil, está preocupada com a presença de empresas poderosas e poluentes. “Se estiverem dentro, têm vantagem. Este lugar trata de soluções para enfrentar a crise climática, mas as empresas estão se apropriando dele para fazer lobby. Eles estão indo na direção oposta.”

Estima-se que as emissões das cinco maiores empresas de carne do mundo sejam significativamente maiores do que as das empresas petrolíferas Shell e BP, enquanto a contribuição de 3,4% da indústria leiteira para as emissões globais induzidas pelo homem é uma percentagem superior à da aviação.

Grupos de lobby da carne também estão no terreno no Dubai, incluindo o North American Meat Institute, que ainda em 2022 afirmava que a extensão do colapso climático provocado pelo homem era “desconhecida”.

Os produtores de pesticidas também compareceram em grande número este ano, um aumento de 30% em comparação com 2022. Juntas, Bayer , Syngenta , BASF e a sua associação comercial, CropLife , que rejeitou as tentativas de promulgar novas medidas climáticas, enviaram 29 delegados.

A indústria de fertilizantes sintéticos também teve um aumento acentuado no número de representantes, com 40 este ano, contra 13 em 2022.

Raj Patel, do grupo de reflexão sobre sustentabilidade IPES-Food, afirmou: “Tal como acontece com o influxo de lobistas do petróleo, as empresas agrícolas industriais estão assustadas. Eles leram a ciência e sabem o quanto os seus negócios impulsionaram a crise climática.”

From coffee to codfish: The foods that will get more expensive with climate change


Droughts and heatwaves fuelled by climate change have endangered food supplies across Europe this summer.

Rice in northern Italy, olive oil in Spain and barley in the UK have all seen dramatic decreases in yield due to environmental conditions.

With global warming increasing the likelihood of extreme weather, many foods across the planet are set to become more scarce.

This means a lot of the basic staples people consume daily will become more expensive.

How is climate change affecting food production?

Climate change is now a serious threat to global food security, recent research shows.

A report released by the International Panel of Experts on Sustainable Food Systems (IPES) in May described climate change as an "endemic and widespread" risk to food supplies. This is also exacerbated by rising living costs and the conflict in Ukraine.

Droughts, heatwaves, flooding and new pests are preventing producers from obtaining a reliable crop in many areas of the world.

Since pre-industrial levels, global temperatures have increased by 1.1°C. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has warned that if that reaches 1.5°C, around 8 per cent of the world’s farmland will become unsuitable for agriculture.

Crop productivity drops in higher temperatures because of dehydration, reduction in pollination and slower photosynthesis. When hit by elevated temperatures and droughts, plant defences fail and crops become susceptible to attacks by insects and disease-inducing pathogens.

Extreme weather is also causing difficulties for livestock and fisheries. The problems are set to worsen if efforts are not made to tackle carbon emissions.

The IPCC recently released a report that confirmed that human-induced climate change is making droughts, floods, wildfires, and heatwaves more severe and more frequent.

According to the UN, the combined effects of climate change, conflict and poverty could see food prices rise by an additional 8.5 per cent by 2027. It warns that millions of people are already facing acute food insecurity.

Cost of staple cereal crops soaring due to climate change

This summer alone, heatwaves withered farmland in India, fires in Tunisia destroyed fields of grain, and flooding in China damaged almost 100,000 hectares of crops.

Staple foods such as wheat, rice, corn, and soybean have been decimated around the world causing prices to soar.

Rising costs of these key crops have plunged populations in Africa, Asia and South America into critical food poverty. In Somalia, for example, a 400 gram can of wheat has doubled in price since February. In India, wheat flour exports have been restricted to ease soaring local prices.

Within Europe, drought in northern Italy’s agricultural heartland has seen the production of crops like rice and corn slashed. Extreme heat and lack of rainfall have also affected tomatoes, grapes and olives.

The IPES report in May found that wheat prices hit a 14-year peak in March and corn prices reached the highest ever recorded.

Staple foods are also being affected by new pests and pathogens. In the US this year, avian flu caused an almost 300 per cent increase in the price of eggs.

Seafood becomes scarcer with rising sea temperatures

Europe’s seas are also suffering the heat. Iceland’s waters are losing fish central to the local diet as capelin and cod swim north to find cooler temperatures.

But shellfish such as oysters, clams and mussels cannot escape the warming waters. In northern Italy, crustaceans are dying off in the Adriatic sea.

In the Po Delta, where the vast Po river flows into the sea, clams and mussels are particularly prized because of the unique aquatic conditions where freshwater and saltwater mix.

Now, fishermen say the shellfish are suffering because the historically low water levels of the river mean very little freshwater flowing into the delta causing it to become too salty.
Global warming increases the price of chocolate, coffee and wine

Luxury foods like coffee, chocolate and wine are also in danger. Increasing temperatures in the coffee-growing regions in Central and South America, Indonesia and Vietnam will make production more difficult.

Between 2020 and 2021, extreme heat in Brazil raised the price of coffee by 70 per cent, according to the International Monetary Fund.

As for chocolate, most cocoa grows in Ivory Coast and Ghana where droughts might soon make the area unsuitable for growing the crop.

Vineyards in California and in Europe are being plagued by extreme weather, from unseasonal frosts to droughts and wildfires. With lower fruit yields, the prices of the wine produced will be higher.

In France, mustard seed production has been hit by drought causing shortages of the condiment.

Consuming meat may soon come with a tax

Meat may begin costing more because of its impact on climate change. Livestock contributes to planet-warming emissions and forests and wildlife are destroyed to make way for land to grow animal feed.

It has led to some governments proposing a tax on beef, pork and chicken consumption. Before the war in Ukraine, agricultural ministers in Germany and the Netherlands were mulling the introduction of a meat tax.

Research published in the Review of Environmental Economics and Policy predicted a potential price increase of 35 per cent to 56 per cent for beef, 25 per cent for poultry, and 19 per cent for lamb and pork in high-income countries.

Can heat-resistant plants be developed to survive climate change?

Scientists at US and Chinese universities have been exploring ways to protect harvests in a warming world. They are studying how to help plants survive extreme heat in the hope it will protect global food supplies.

But the IPES researchers also warn that immediate action to reduce emissions needs to be taken to avoid major food price rises in the near future.

If this is neglected, the world will find itself "sleepwalking into the catastrophic and systematic food crises of the future", the experts said.

More than 50 global NGOs call on COP26 to formally acknowledge animal agriculture as major climate change contributor at this year’s conference

August 25, 2021 LONDON—More than 50 animal protection, environmental and food justice organisations from around the globe have written to Rt. Hon. Alok Sharma MP, president of the COP26 climate change conference organised by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), calling on the UNFCCC to publicly recognise the catastrophic impact animal agriculture has on the planet at this year’s conference.

In the animal agriculture industry, more than 88 billion animals are raised and slaughtered for food every year. This industry is responsible for an estimated 14.5%—16.5% of human induced greenhouse gas emissions globally, on par with emissions levels of the entire transport sector. Despite animal agriculture being one of the largest contributors to climate change, it is largely neglected by countries around the world in climate change mitigation strategies and commitments.

The letter, signed by Humane Society International, World Animal Protection, Brighter Green Compassion in World Farming, 50by40, Animal Equality, FOUR PAWS International, ProVeg International, RSPCA, The Humane League and others calls on the COP26 conference, taking place in Glasgow in November, to formally acknowledge animal agriculture’s climate impact. The groups hope that formal recognition at COP26 will encourage world leaders to commit to meat and dairy consumption reduction strategies to meet the Paris Agreement’s below 2°C target.

The letter reads: “Addressing these urgent areas in the UNFCCC COP26 meeting would help propel governments around the world to take action and would provide world leaders with another high impact option to add to their toolbox for tackling climate change. Working with farmers to support and catalyse a shift towards more plant-centric food production and consumption is a proactive step that must be taken to future-proof global food and agricultural industries… We call on the UNFCCC to formally and publicly recognise the role of animal agriculture as one of the largest contributors of climate change and to open a greater space for dialogue.”

In addition to significant greenhouse gas emissions, the farm animal production sector is also the single largest anthropogenic user of land, with meat, egg, dairy and aquaculture production systems using approximately 83% of the world’s farmland while providing just 37% of the world’s protein and 18% of calories. Animal agriculture is also a major driver of deforestation, species extinction, land degradation, exhaustion of water resources and pollution.

Reducing meat and dairy production and consumption is one of the most effective actions we can take to avoid catastrophic climate change. Scientists agree—including the 107 experts who prepared a report for the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and the more than 11,000 signatories from 153 countries to a recent paper in the journal BioScience —that global shifts towards more plant-based diets will be key in tackling climate change.

The UN’s latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPPC) report revealed that the climate crisis is poised to get worse if greenhouse gas emissions continue to surge, and that the future of the planet depends on the choices that humanity makes today. The report is a stark warning that if we want to win the ‘Race to Zero’, it’s imperative that we tackle every major driver of climate change, including intensive animal agriculture, collaboratively across all countries.

Julie Janovsky, Humane Society International’s vice president for farm animal welfare, says: “When it comes to the impacts of animal agriculture on climate change, we cannot continue to kick the can down the road. While many governments and constituencies have recognized and taken action to address the impacts of the energy and transport sector, governments have yet to adopt policies to reduce the impact of large-scale, intensive animal agriculture on the environment. If we are serious about avoiding climate catastrophe, world leaders must acknowledge the science and implement strategies to change our global food system to one that significantly reduces industrial animal agriculture. Reducing the number of animals raised and slaughtered is a legitimate and essential component of tackling climate change, restoring biodiversity and ending the cruelty caused by factory farms. Ignoring the immense climate impact of industrial animal farming is no longer an option, and the COP26 climate change conference offers a vital opportunity for world leaders to take action.”

Cities and countries are beginning to acknowledge and make an effort to reduce meat consumption as a climate change mitigation strategy. Earlier this year, France announced that its climate and resilience bill encourages a more plant-based diet to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions. The bill includes that by 2023, all school cafeterias will have to feature one compulsory vegetarian menu once a week, and that at least one daily vegetarian option should be offered in all state-run canteens. Shortly after, the City Council of Berkeley in the United States also passed a resolution to divert half of the city’s spending money from animal-based foods to plant-based foods by 2024. Further, the Council will also look to adopt a long-term goal of replacing 100% of animal products with plant-based products to combat climate change.
