An Israeli firm blacklisted by the UN for its West Bank activities has raked in over $1bn from North Sea oil and gas in just six years – and could be set to earn even more if the Rosebank field is approved.

Analysis by The Ferret shows Aberdeen oil company Ithaca Energy has paid over $1bn in dividends to its largest shareholder, Delek Group, since 2020.

Delek, an Israeli energy conglomerate, has been named on a United Nations database of firms whose activities in the occupied West Bank raise “particular human rights concerns”.

Ithaca owns a stake in the Rosebank oil field off the coast of Shetland, which the UK energy minister Ed Miliband is under pressure to green light. It also now owns 100 per cent of the Cambo field, which was at the centre of controversy in 2021.

Lawyers for the campaign group Uplift have claimed that Ithaca’s connection to Delek means approving Rosebank could risk the UK breaching the Geneva convention, and alleged that the Israeli company’s activities could be seen as “ancillary” to war crimes.

Environmental campaigners told The Ferret that “not one penny of profit should flow from the North Sea towards Delek” and that choosing to approve Rosebank would be “morally reprehensible” because it could “bolster" its activities in the West Bank.

Both Ithaca and Delek were approached for comment.

Delek has been Ithaca’s largest shareholder since 2017, but its pay-outs from the firm have accelerated in recent years as Ithaca expanded its presence in UK fossil fuels. Ithaca says it now holds stakes in six of the UK’s ten largest oil and gas fields.

Our analysis shows Ithaca paid $569m in dividends to Delek across 2024 and 2025, with a further $101m distributed on 16 April this year. That takes total payments since 2020 to more than $1bn.

Delek has previously described Ithaca’s operations in the North Sea as part of the “growth engine” for its wider business.

As The Ferret first reported when Ithaca bought Cambo back in 2022, Delek was included in a 2020 list of companies whose activities in the occupied West Bank “raised particular human rights concerns” after a UN fact finding mission. It remained on updated versions of the list published in 2023 and 2025.

Delek was included because it was deemed to be providing services and utilities to support the maintenance of the settlements and was using natural resources in the West bank for “business purposes”. Israeli settlements in the West Bank are widely regarded as illegal under international law.

We also previously found that another firm in which Delek holds a significant stake – Delek Israel – has held contracts to provide refueling services to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

Rosebank is at the centre of a political row over whether the UK should continue to expand oil and gas production in the North Sea.

It is the UK’s largest untapped oil field and is estimated to contain 300 million barrels of oil. Backers of the project argue it could create thousands of jobs and support the country’s energy security in an increasingly unstable world.

Opponents claim it is incompatible with the UK’s climate targets and would do little to lower bills because most of the oil extracted from it would be exported.

The field was initially approved by the Conservative government in 2023, but Scotland’s court of session later found that decision unlawful, deeming that its full environmental impact had not been considered.

A revised application has since been submitted and the final decision will rest with Ed Miliband, who has faced pressure from politicians and industry to approve the project.

Analysis by WWF Norway previously estimated a further $300m (£222m) could flow to Delek if Rosebank goes ahead. Ithaca is expected to make a final decision on whether to try and develop the Cambo field either this year or in 2027.

“If the UK Government chooses to green light Rosebank, it would be a morally reprehensible decision that turns a blind eye to the fact that the project could bolster Delek’s activities in the Occupied Palestinian Territories,” Lauren MacDonald from the campaign group Stop Rosebank told The Ferret.

She continued: "There are many reasons why this toxic field should be stopped - but this is simply indefensible.

“The UK Government is well aware of these risks, and has even been warned that it could breach its own obligations under international law if it allows the field to go ahead.

"If the UK and Scottish governments are serious about creating a better world, they will pull the plug on Rosebank for good and ensure no further profits flow from our North Sea to Delek.”

Ithaca has not publicly commented on Delek’s links to the West Bank but has pointed out that it is a London stock exchange listed company and claims to be “governed by the highest standards of corporate governance”.

“Ithaca is one of the biggest investors in the North Sea and Scotland, is a responsible employer and is a major contributor to both the UK Treasury through tax payments and the UK’s energy security,” it told us in response to a story last August.

The UK Government also failed to respond to a request for comment. It previously said in regard to Rosebank that it cannot comment on individual projects.

"You cannot commit genocide in Gaza, invade Lebanon, bomb Iran, Syria, Yemen, and Iraq, violate Geneva and Vienna Conventions, international law, human rights, and state sovereignty, then hide behind anti-Semitism and the Holocaust." - Mohamad Safa

3. A Projeção da revista "The Lancet"

Microsoft storing Israeli intelligence trove used to attack Palestinians

Microsoft Israel’s R&D Center, Herzliya

The Israeli army’s elite cyber warfare unit is using Microsoft’s cloud servers to store masses of intelligence on Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza — information that has been used to plan deadly airstrikes and shape military operations, an investigation by +972 Magazine, Local Call, and the Guardian can reveal.

Unit 8200, roughly equivalent in function to the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA), has transferred audio files of millions of calls by Palestinians in the occupied territories onto Microsoft’s cloud computing platform, Azure, operationalizing what is likely one of the world’s largest and most intrusive collections of surveillance data over a single population group. This is according to interviews with 11 Microsoft and Israeli intelligence sources in addition to a cache of leaked internal Microsoft documents obtained by the Guardian.

In a meeting at Microsoft’s headquarters in Seattle in late 2021, the then-head of Unit 8200, Yossi Sariel, won the support of the tech giant’s CEO, Satya Nadella, to develop a customized and segregated area within Azure that has facilitated the army’s mass surveillance project. According to the sources, Sariel approached Microsoft because the scope of Israel’s intelligence on millions of Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza is so vast that it cannot be stored on military servers alone.

Microsoft’s immense storage and computing power capabilities enabled what multiple Israeli sources described as the project’s ambitious goal: to store “a million calls an hour.”

Following the 2021 meeting, a dedicated team of Microsoft engineers began working directly with Unit 8200 to build a model that would allow the intelligence unit to use the American company’s cloud services from within its own bases. According to one intelligence source, some of these Microsoft employees were themselves alumni of Unit 8200, which made the collaboration “much easier.”

According to the Guardian’s reporting, the leaked documents suggest that 11,500 terabytes of Israeli military data — equivalent to roughly 200 million hours of audio — were being stored on Microsoft’s servers in the Netherlands by July of this year, while smaller portions were being stored in Ireland and Israel. It is not possible to tell how much of this data belongs specifically to Unit 8200; as a previous investigation by +972, Local Call, and the Guardian revealed earlier this year, dozens of Israeli army units have purchased cloud computing services from Microsoft, and the company has a footprint in all major military infrastructures in Israel.

The leaked documents further reveal that before the current Gaza war, Microsoft’s leadership viewed the cultivation of the company’s relationship with Unit 8200 as a lucrative business opportunity and characterized it internally as “an incredibly powerful brand moment” for Azure. Nadella himself, during his 2021 meeting with Sariel, defined the partnership as “critical” for Microsoft, and committed to providing the resources to support it.

Microsoft has said publicly that it found “no evidence” that its technology was used to harm Palestinians in Gaza, and a spokesperson told us in response to this investigation that the company was unaware that its products had been used to aid the surveillance of civilians. But three Israeli intelligence sources stated that Unit 8200’s cloud-based intelligence trove has been used over the past two years to plan lethal airstrikes in Gaza, and that it often serves as a basis for arrests and other military operations in the West Bank.

‘Tracking everyone, all the time’
Sariel’s interest in upgrading Israel’s mass surveillance infrastructure dates back to 2015, when he was an intelligence officer in Israel’s Central Command. That year witnessed a wave of “lone-wolf” stabbing attacks in the West Bank, Jerusalem, and inside the Green Line — many of them carried out by Palestinian teenagers previously unknown to the security services, making the attacks particularly difficult to thwart.

“We found ourselves going … from funeral to funeral,” Sariel recalled in a book he published about artificial intelligence in 2021, the year he took over as head of Unit 8200 (he resigned last year).

“[A Palestinian] decides to perpetrate an attack using a kitchen knife to stab a victim, or the family vehicle to run people over,” he wrote. “Sometimes the person doesn’t even know a day before that he or she is going to commit such an attack. In these cases, traditional intelligence agencies are helpless. How can such an attack be predicted or prevented?”

Sariel’s solution, according to an intelligence officer who served under him at the time, was to start “tracking everyone, all the time.”

Over the next few years, he led a large-scale, well-funded project that dramatically expanded Israel’s surveillance of Palestinians and integrated multiple intelligence databases. “Suddenly, the public became our enemy,” another source who served in the unit under Sariel said.

In his book, Sariel wrote about the need for intelligence agencies to “migrate to the cloud” to deal with the problem of how to store increasingly vast amounts of data. +972 and Local Call previously revealed that the Israeli army has also used Amazon’s cloud computing platform, AWS, to store internal military data.

Sariel saw the collaboration with Microsoft as a breakthrough specifically because it would enable the mass storage of audio files. Multiple sources used the word “infinite” to describe the project’s scale.

Beforehand, Unit 8200 could store the calls of tens of thousands of Palestinians defined as “suspects” on its internal servers. The unit also developed a system called “noisy message,” which collects Palestinians’ text messages and assigns each of them a rating indicating their level of “danger.” But with the help of Azure, Unit 8200 was able to begin storing the calls of millions of Palestinians, vastly expanding its pool of data.

A senior source in Unit 8200 explained that Sariel viewed his relationship with Nadella, the Microsoft CEO, as a tool to advance “revolutions” in mass surveillance of Palestinians. “Yossi bragged a lot, even to me, about his connection with Satya,” the source said. (In response to this investigation, a Microsoft spokesperson stated that Nadella was only present in the 2021 meeting for 10 minutes, and that their only further contact was a condolence card Sariel sent after the death of Nadella’s son.)

Not everyone in the unit looked favorably on this partnership. One source familiar with the project said it was significantly more expensive to transfer data to Microsoft’s servers than it would have been to purchase servers and processors independently. Others in the unit felt uncomfortable about storing sensitive information overseas. But Sariel insisted, making clear his excitement for the project’s potential.

“For Yossi, ‘cloud’ and ‘Microsoft’ are buzzwords,” one intelligence source said. “He sold it internally and that’s how he got a huge budget. He said it was the solution to our problem in the Palestinian arena, and that this was the future.”

‘This isn’t leaving Azure anytime soon’
By early 2022, engineers from Microsoft and Unit 8200 were working quickly and closely to design a special model within the cloud that would be carefully tailored to the unit’s needs. “The rhythm of interaction with [8200] is daily, top down and bottom up,” one internal document noted.

As part of its effort to migrate vast amounts of its surveillance data to the cloud, the leaked documents reveal, Unit 8200 was prepared to “push the envelope” on the types of data it was willing to store on Azure. A significant portion of the raw intelligence was expected to reside initially in Microsoft data centers outside of Israel. But Israel’s Justice Ministry and Finance Ministry raised concerns about potential lawsuits against cloud service providers abroad, which could force them to hand over stored data if it was suspected of being used to violate human rights.

An internal legal opinion from the Justice Ministry in 2022 noted that both France and Germany required corporations to check for human rights violations in their supply chains by law. If it were to be revealed that these corporations are operating in the occupied Palestinian territories, such laws “may lead to the issuance of orders to prevent or restrict services” to Israel, it noted. The ministry warned that the Netherlands was working on similar legislation.

Since cloud service providers are “some of the largest and most powerful companies in the world,” one Justice Ministry document warned, a potential lawsuit would be particularly harmful to Israel. Despite these concerns, Unit 8200’s partnership with Microsoft continued, spearheaded by Sariel himself.

After Israel launched a war on the Gaza Strip in the wake of Hamas’ October 7 attack, it soon became clear that the enclave would remain under Israeli military control for a significant period. As a result, an intelligence officer explained, internal enthusiasm for storing mass surveillance data from Gaza on the cloud-based system increased.

“[The army] understood that this is also needed in Gaza — that we’re heading toward long-term control there, like in the West Bank,” the source explained. “This [surveillance repository] isn’t leaving Azure anytime soon. It’s a huge project.”

Several sources insisted that the project has “saved Israeli lives” by preventing Palestinian attacks. “You hear [someone say], ‘I want to become a martyr,’ and you feel reassured, as a security officer, that this stuff is being picked up by our system,” one officer said.

But such blanket surveillance allows Israel to find potentially incriminating information on virtually any Palestinian, which can be used for all manner of purposes — including blackmail, administrative detention, or retroactively justifying killings.

“These people get entered into the system, and the data on them just keeps growing,” an intelligence officer who recently served in the West Bank explained. “When they need to arrest someone and there isn’t a good enough reason to do so, [the surveillance repository] is where they find the excuse. We’re now in a situation where almost no one in the [occupied] territories is ‘clean,’ in terms of what intelligence has on them.”
‘Serious allegations of complicity in genocide’

In internal documents from 2023, Microsoft estimated that the partnership with Unit 8200 would generate hundreds of millions of dollars for the company over five years. It noted that the unit’s leadership hoped to multiply the amount of data it stores in Microsoft’s servers “tenfold” over the next few years.

But media reports of Microsoft’s complicity in Israel’s onslaught on Gaza — including the revelation by +972 and Local Call that the company’s cloud and artificial intelligence sales to the Israeli military skyrocketed during the war — have increased pressure on the company from the public as well as from its own employees.

In one highly publicized incident at the company’s annual conference in May, a Microsoft engineer interrupted Nadella’s keynote speech. “Satya, how about you show how Microsoft is killing Palestinians?” he shouted. “How about you show how Israeli war crimes are powered by Azure?”

Against this backdrop, 60 Microsoft investors, collectively holding shares worth $80 million, approached the company in July with a demand to review its monitoring and oversight mechanisms for customers who misuse AI tools, “in the face of serious allegations of complicity in genocide and other international crimes.”

Responding to the mounting pressure, Microsoft announced that it had conducted a review of whether its sales to Israel’s Defense Ministry had led to human rights violations. According to the statement, Microsoft provided “limited emergency support” to the Israeli army in the aftermath of October 7 to “help rescue hostages.” The company emphasized that there is “no evidence to date” that the military used Azure to “harm people in the conflict in Gaza,” stressing that Microsoft’s support didn’t violate “the privacy and other rights of civilians in Gaza.”

Yet the internal documents detailing Microsoft’s partnership with Unit 8200 paint a different picture of the company’s concern for Palestinians’ privacy. In fact, Palestinians were not mentioned in the documents summarizing the 2021 meeting between Sariel and Nadella, which also involved Israeli intelligence officers and senior Microsoft executives.

According to the Guardian’s reporting, Unit 8200 informed Microsoft of its intention to transfer up to “70 percent” of its data, including secret and top secret data, to Azure. And while the project’s ultimate goal (beyond “deepen[ing] the partnership”) does not appear to have been explicitly stated, an intelligence source said that executives of Microsoft’s Israeli subsidiary — who worked closely with Unit 8200 personnel on the project — were given clearer indications.

“Technically, they’re not supposed to be told exactly what it is, but you don’t have to be a genius to figure it out,” the source noted. “You tell [Microsoft] we don’t have any more space on the servers, that it’s audio files. It’s pretty clear what it is.”

In response to our investigation, a Microsoft spokesperson stated: “Microsoft’s engagement with Unit 8200 has been based on strengthening cybersecurity and protecting Israel from nation state and terrorist cyber attacks. This was the purpose of the meeting in November of 2021 and, in addition to our standard commercial relationship, is the basis of our ongoing relationship with the 8200 Unit.

“The leadership of Unit 8200 was interested in assessing security protection for data in our Azure public cloud offering,” the spokesperson continued. “We offer specific protections to numerous customers in retail, financial services and consulting organizations, as well as governments. Unit 8200 was interested in and tested this security; this was not a ‘secret’ or tented project.

“At no time during this engagement or since that time has Microsoft been aware of the surveillance of civilians or collection of their cell phone conversations using Microsoft’s services, including through the external review it commissioned,” the spokesperson went on. “Any allegations about Microsoft leadership involvement and support of this project … are false.”

The IDF Spokesperson stated that “the coordination between the Defense Ministry and the IDF with civilian companies is conducted based on regulated and legally supervised agreements,” adding that the army operates “in accordance with international law, with the aim of countering terrorism and ensuring the security of the state and its citizens.”

Yossi Sariel declined to comment, referring us to the IDF Spokesperson.

Following publication of this article, the IDF Spokesperson sent another statement: “We appreciate Microsoft’s support to protect our cybersecurity. We confirm that Microsoft is not and has not been working with the IDF on the storage or processing of data.”

The US has imposed sanctions on UN Human Rights Council Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese for using her position to oppose the most thoroughly documented genocide in history.

At the same time, the US has removed Syria’s Al Qaeda franchise HTS from its list of designated terrorist organizations, because its leader successfully carried out the regime change in Damascus that the western empire had been chasing for years.

At the same time, the UK has added nonviolent anti-genocide activism group Palestine Action to its list of banned terrorist organizations for opposing the Gaza holocaust.

At the same time, the Israeli prime minister who is carrying out that holocaust has nominated the American president who is helping him perpetrate genocidal atrocities for a Nobel Peace Prize.

At the same time, Israel has continued its ban on foreign journalists entering Gaza, while also arresting the Israeli journalist who helped expose the IDF officials who cooked up fake atrocity propaganda about burnt babies on October 7.

At the same time, the Trump administration has enraged its MAGA base by concluding that Jeffrey Epstein had no client list for any kind of sexual blackmail operation and definitely committed suicide.

The western empire is one nonstop insult to our intelligence. The peace advocates are terrorists, the genocide architects deserve peace prizes, the journalists are dangerous, and Epstein was just a wealthy socialite who made a few mistakes.

They do everything they can to make us stupid via propaganda, Silicon Valley information control, and indoctrination schooling systems, and then they treat us like we’re morons for the rest of our lives.

The empire depends on ignorance. The more stupid, racist, gullible, and easily distracted we become, the nastier agendas the empire can roll out. Now here we are watching a live-streamed genocide unfold right in front of our eyes for nearly two years while being tube fed a daily diet of the most ridiculous lies imaginable.

As Aaron Bushnell said, this is what our ruling class has decided will be normal.

Israel’s weaponization of starvation is how genocides always end. I covered the insidious effects of orchestrated starvation in the Guatemalan Highlands during the genocidal campaign of Gen. Efraín Ríos Montt, the famine in southern Sudan that left a quarter of a million dead — I walked past the frail and skeletal corpses of families lining roadsides — and later during the war in Bosnia when Serbs cut off food supplies to enclaves such as Srebrencia and Goražde.

Starvation was weaponized by the Ottoman Empire to decimate the Armenians. It was used to kill millions of Ukrainians in the Holodomor in 1932 and 1933. It was employed by the Nazis against the Jews in the ghettos in World War II. German soldiers used food, as Israel does, like bait. They offered three kilograms of bread and one kilogram of marmalade to lure desperate families in the Warsaw Ghetto onto transports to the death camps. “There were times when hundreds of people had to wait in line for several days to be ‘deported,’” Marek Edelman writes in “The Ghetto Fights.” “The number of people anxious to obtain the three kilograms of bread was such that the transports, now leaving twice daily with 12,000 people, could not accommodate them all.” And when crowds became unruly, as in Gaza, the German troops fired deadly volleys that ripped through emaciated husks of women, children and the elderly.

This tactic is as old as warfare itself.
The report in the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, that Israeli soldiers are ordered to shoot into crowds of Palestinians at aid hubs, with 580 killed and 4,216 wounded, is not a surprise. It is the predictable denouement of the genocide, the inevitable conclusion to a campaign of mass extermination.

Israel, with its targeted assassinations of at least 1,400 health care workers, hundreds of United Nations (U.N.) workers, journalists, police and even poets and academics, its obliteration of multi-story apartment blocks wiping out dozens of families, its shelling of designated “humanitarian zones” where Palestinians huddle under tents, tarps or in the open air, its systematic targeting of U.N. food distribution centers, bakeries and aid convoys or its sadistic sniper fire that guns down children, long ago illustrated that Palestinians are regarded as vermin worthy only of annihilation.

The blockade of food and humanitarian aid, imposed on Gaza since March 2, is reducing Palestinians to abject dependence. To eat, they must crawl towards their killers and beg. Humiliated, terrified, desperate for a few scraps of food, they are stripped of dignity, autonomy and agency. This is by intent.

Yousef al-Ajouri, 40, explained to Middle East Eye his nightmarish journey to one of four aid hubs set up by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). The hubs are not designed to meet the needs of the Palestinians, who once relied on 400 aid distribution sites, but to lure them from northern Gaza to the south. Israel, which on Sunday again ordered Palestinians to leave northern Gaza, is steadily expanding its annexation of the coastal strip. Palestinians are corralled like livestock into narrow metal chutes at distribution points which are overseen by heavily armed mercenaries. They receive, if they are one of the fortunate few, a small box of food.

Al-Ajouri, who before the genocide was a taxi driver, lives with his wife, seven children and his mother and father in a tent in al-Saraya, near the middle of Gaza City. He set out to an aid hub at Salah al-Din Road near the Netzarim corridor, to find some food for his children, who he said cry constantly “because of how hungry they are.” On the advice of his neighbor in the tent next to him, he dressed in loose clothing “so that I could run and be agile.” He carried a bag for canned and packaged goods because the crush of the crowds meant “no one was able to carry the boxes the aid came in.”

He left at about 9 p.m. with five other men “including an engineer and a teacher,” and “children aged 10 and 12.” They did not take the official route designated by the Israeli army. The massive crowds converging on the aid point along the official route ensure that most never get close enough to receive food. Instead, they walked in the darkness in areas exposed to Israeli gunfire, often having to crawl to avoid being seen.

“As I crawled, I looked over, and to my surprise, saw several women and elderly people taking the same treacherous route as us,” he explained. “At one point, there was a barrage of live gunfire all around me. We hid behind a destroyed building. Anyone who moved or made a noticeable motion was immediately shot by snipers. Next to me was a tall, light-haired young man using the flashlight on his phone to guide him. The others yelled at him to turn it off. Seconds later, he was shot. He collapsed to the ground and lay there bleeding, but no one could help or move him. He died within minutes.”

He passed six bodies along the route who had been shot dead by Israeli soldiers.

Al-Ajouri reached the hub at 2 a.m., the designated time for aid distribution. He saw a green light turned on ahead of him which signaled that aid was about to be distributed. Thousands began to run towards the light, pushing, shoving and trampling each other. He fought his way through the crowd until he reached the aid.

“I started feeling around for the aid boxes and grabbed a bag that felt like rice,” he said. “But just as I did, someone else snatched it from my hands. I tried to hold on, but he threatened to stab me with his knife. Most people there were carrying knives, either to defend themselves or to steal from others. Eventually, I managed to grab four cans of beans, a kilogram of bulgur, and half a kilogram of pasta. Within moments, the boxes were empty. Most of the people there, including women, children and the elderly, got nothing. Some begged others to share. But no one could afford to give up what they managed to get.”

The U.S. contractors and Israeli soldiers overseeing the mayhem laughed and pointed their weapons at the crowd. Some filmed with their phones.

“Minutes later, red smoke grenades were thrown into the air,” he remembered. “Someone told me that it was the signal to evacuate the area. After that, heavy gunfire began. Me, Khalil and a few others headed to al-Awda Hospital in Nuseirat because our friend Wael had injured his hand during the journey. I was shocked by what I saw at the hospital. There were at least 35 martyrs lying dead on the ground in one of the rooms. A doctor told me they had all been brought in that same day. They were each shot in the head or chest while queuing near the aid center. Their families were waiting for them to come home with food and ingredients. Now, they were corpses.”

GHF is a Mossad-funded creation of Israel’s Defense Ministry that contracts with UG Solutions and Safe Reach Solutions, run by former members of the CIA and U.S. Special Forces. GHF is headed by Rev. Johnnie Moore, a far-right Christian Zionist with close ties to Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu. The organization has also contracted anti-Hamas drug-smuggling gangs to provide security at aid sites.

As Chris Gunness, a former spokesperson for the United Nations Relief and Work Agency (UNRWA) told Al Jazeera, GHF is “aid washing,” a way to mask the reality that “people are being starved into submission.”

Israel, along with the U.S. and European countries that provide weapons to sustain the genocide, have chosen to disregard the January 2024 ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) which demanded immediate protection for civilians in Gaza and widespread provision of humanitarian assistance.

Haaretz, in its article headlined “‘It’s a Killing Field’: IDF Soldiers Ordered to Shoot Deliberately at Unarmed Gazans Waiting for Humanitarian Aid” reported that Israeli commanders order soldiers to open fire on crowds to keep them away from aid sites or disperse them.

“The distribution centers typically open for just one hour each morning,” Haaretz writes. “According to officers and soldiers who served in their areas, the IDF fires at people who arrive before opening hours to prevent them from approaching, or again after the centers close, to disperse them. Since some of the shooting incidents occurred at night — ahead of the opening — it’s possible that some civilians couldn't see the boundaries of the designated area.”

“It's a killing field,” one soldier told Haaretz. “Where I was stationed, between one and five people were killed every day. They're treated like a hostile force — no crowd-control measures, no tear gas — just live fire with everything imaginable: heavy machine guns, grenade launchers, mortars. Then, once the center opens, the shooting stops, and they know they can approach. Our form of communication is gunfire.”

“We open fire early in the morning if someone tries to get in line from a few hundred meters away, and sometimes we just charge at them from close range. But there’s no danger to the forces,” the soldier explained, “I’m not aware of a single instance of return fire. There’s no enemy, no weapons.”

He said the deployment at the aid sites is known as “Operation Salted Fish,” a reference to the Israeli name for the children’s game “Red light, green light.” The game was featured in the first episode of the South Korean dystopian thriller Squid Game, in which financially desperate people are killed as they battle each other for money.

Israel has obliterated the civilian and humanitarian infrastructure in Gaza. It has reduced Palestinians, half a million of whom face starvation, into desperate herds. The goal is to break Palestinians, to make them malleable and entice them to leave Gaza, never to return.

There is talk from the Trump White House about a ceasefire. But don’t be fooled. Israel has nothing left to destroy. Its saturation bombing over 20 months has reduced Gaza to a moonscape. Gaza is uninhabitable, a toxic wilderness where Palestinians, living amid broken slabs of concrete and pools of raw sewage, lack food and clean water, fuel, shelter, electricity, medicine and an infrastructure to survive. The final impediment to the annexation of Gaza are the Palestinians themselves. They are the primary target. Starvation is the weapon of choice.

Cem bombas dia e noite a explodir-te o pai, a mãe,

Sabes?
