Quando Boy George lançou o tema The War Song, tive uma reacção cínica e achei o video muito light: como é que o pessoal pode dançar com o sofrimento de tantas vítimas das armas e guerras? Algumas guerras são motivações espúrias e estúpidas: gente maluca, com ideias neoimperialistas, eugenia, nacionalistas, falsas interpretações da realidade etc... Agora, que envelheci vejo o clip de outra forma. Há alguma ingenuidade do cantor, mas realmente o mundo devia ser mais divertido, baseado em jogos tradicionais, mais pacifista e aproveitar os bons momentos da vida, como por exemplo, dançar.
Crítica à ignorância e apatia em "The War Song"
Em "The War Song", dos Culture Club, Boy George utiliza um refrão repetitivo e direto - “War is stupid and people are stupid” (A guerra é estúpida e as pessoas são estúpidas) - para ironizar a forma simplista e superficial com que a sociedade encara a guerra. O próprio artista já afirmou em entrevistas que a opção por uma linguagem simples foi intencional, servindo como crítica à apatia coletiva e à glamorização dos conflitos. Excertos como “love means nothing in some strange quarters” (o amor não significa nada em certos lugares) reforçam a ideia de que valores humanos básicos são facilmente descartados em contextos de intolerância e violência.
A letra também aborda como o egoísmo e a intolerância alimentam guerras, exemplificado em “What's mine is my own, I won't give it to you, no matter what you say, no matter what you do” (O que é meu é meu, não te vou dar, não importa o que digas, não importa o que faças).
