”Two Pink Prince-de-Bulgarie Roses” - "Deux roses Prince de Bulgarie" - "Twee Prins van Bulgarije-rozen" por Frans Mortelmans

Frans Mortelmans was a Belgian painter, draughtsman and engraver. He initially produced portraits, history paintings, marines and genre scenes but later specialised in still lifes, and in particular flower pieces, with which he achieved considerable success. He was a very prolific painter and his most productive period is situated around 1900. His work situates itself between impressionism and realism with some luminist touches. He also produced many pastel works.

Frans Mortelmans studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Art in Antwerp from 1876 through 1886 under the direction of Lucas Victor Schaefels (1824 - 1885) and Charles Verlat (1824 - 1890) and at the High Institute of Fine Arts from 1887 through 1891. He ultimately became a professor at the Berchem School of Fine Arts in 1901 and an Honorary Director of the Berchem School of Art and Painting in Antwerp. In 1932 he was made Commander in the Order of Leopold.

His father, Karel (Charles) Mortelmans (1832 - 1899), was a printer in Antwerp and his brother was the famous composer, Lodewijk Mortelmans (1868 - 1952). Two of his most famous students were Joris Minne (1897 - 1988) and Antoon Mastboom (1868 - 1954).
