The Hummingbird and the Forest Fire Story narrated by Wangari Maathai

“Conta-se que, certo dia, houve um incêndio na floresta e que todos os animais se puseram em fuga. Todos, excepto o beija-flor. Ia e voltava, ia e voltava, trazendo uma gota de água no bico, que deixava cair sobre as labaredas e a terra calcinada. E, quando um dos animais em fuga o interpelou, dizendo ser impossível extinguir o fogo daquele modo, o beija-flor respondeu: “Eu sei que não são estas gotas que vão apagar o fogo, mas eu faço a minha parte…”

"As a fire sweeps through the forest, the animals are transfixed, and unable to do anything. Only the tiny hummingbird has the strength of heart to try to put the fire out, one drop at a time. When discouraged and questioned by the other animals, the hummingbird responds: "I am doing what I can."
