Trinity - Nuclear detonations from 1945 to present plotted on a world map – video

We, ICAN believe we do can really ban nuclear. If non-nuclear-weapon states take the lead and start a process to ban and eliminate all nuclear weapons on the basis of the catastrophic humanitarian consequences they produce, nuclear weapons will not be seen as power instruments but unacceptable weapons like chemical and biological weapons.

Trinity from Orbital Mechanics on Vimeo.

This eerie visualisation was created by Ortibal Mechanics, an audiovisual collective based in Montreal. It begins in 1945, before picking up speed with thousands of detonations over the following decades. Each one is colour-coded: red for atmospheric, yellow for underground, and blue for underwater.

Coder Ehsan Rezaie included every detonation he could cross-reference in both the Australian government’s geoscience database and this archive. The only specific omission is the 2013 North Korean test, which has only been verified by detection of seismic activity
